UW Stevens Point School of Education Students Make “Cool Choices” in Green & Healthy Schools Program Learning Motivational Tools for Future Success
Stevens Point, WI – March 25, 2014 – Natural resources class students at UW Stevens Point School of Education recently played a game promoting real-world sustainability and wellness activities. The game is part of Wisconsin Green & Healthy Schools (GHS) PK-12 program software designed by Cool Choices. GHS is a partnership of the Department of Public Instruction, the Department of Natural Resources and the Wisconsin Center for Environmental Education. Cool Choices, a nonprofit promoting environmentally sustainable practices, has partnered with GHS to implement the custom sustainability online game for public and private Wisconsin PK-12 schools participating in GHS.
“The GHS Cool Choices game introduced 55 future educators from UW Stevens Point to GHS programming,” said Sara Windjue, Energy Education Specialist with Wisconsin Center for Environmental Education. “As these students graduate and begin teaching in Wisconsin’s schools they’ll know about the free GHS program, and have tools to motivate and promote sustainable, healthy and safe choices!”
“It’s exciting that UW Stevens Point students have the opportunity to experience GHS programming as part of their Educational Department coursework,” said Kathy Kuntz, Executive Director of Cool Choices. “GHS aims to reduce waste, improve health and wellness, and increase environmental literacy in Wisconsin public and private schools. These students have had a great opportunity to learn how our fun, social and easy approach helps participating GHS schools engage students, faculty and staff to adopt new and lasting sustainable practices.”
The Green and Healthy Schools program is free to Wisconsin public and private PK-12 schools. The next round of games begin March 31. Interested schools should visit ghswisconsin.org to learn more about joining GHS or contact Sara Windjue at Sara.Windjue@uwsp.edu directly about participating in the game.
